Krystal Thompson is a lifelong public servant whose dedication, leadership, and joyful presence have made her a beloved force in Sugar Creek’s civic and cultural life.
Krystal Thompson has spent her life in service to Sugar Creek—not for recognition, but because it’s simply who she is. Whether behind the scenes as a 911 dispatcher or front and center performing at the Mayor’s Tree Lighting, Krystal has long been a vital thread in the fabric of her community.
A proud graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Krystal was deeply involved in school life—leading the National Honor Society as president her senior year and participating in Pom Pon, Spirit Club, and Science Club. After earning her associate degree at MCC-Blue River, she began working as a reserve dispatcher for Sugar Creek Police and Fire in 2005. By early 2006, she was full-time.
Over the next 15 years, Krystal became the heartbeat of the dispatch center. She trained new team members, managed schedules, and took on the responsibilities of supervisor—all while calmly guiding first responders and citizens through some of their most difficult moments.
In 2009, she was named TIPS Hotline Crimestoppers Call Taker of the Year. In 2012, she received the Everyday Hero Award from the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), a fitting recognition for someone who remained steady and compassionate under pressure.
Even after stepping away from full-time dispatch work in 2020 to reclaim evenings and weekends for herself, Krystal remained on as a reserve dispatcher through 2022—and she didn’t slow down. She has long served on the Sugar Creek Parks and Recreation Committee, where she’s held roles as Secretary, Vice Chairperson, and Chairperson.
She regularly performs at city events with Studio 3V and dances at the Slavic Festival as part of an ethnic dance troupe. Her past roles also include donning the “Cell Phone Sally” costume to educate kids about emergency services and even a stint as a cheerleader for the Sugar Creek Shockers, the town’s semi-pro football team.
Today, Krystal enjoys spending her hard-earned free time with friends and family, catching Royals and Chiefs games, diving into a good book, or hitting a Zumba class. Her energy, compassion, and love for community have made her a constant presence in Sugar Creek life—and a shining example of everyday leadership. For her many years of service and spirit, Sugar Creek proudly honors Krystal Thompson as its 2025 Citizen of the Year.
