Since 2010, the Grain Valley Education Foundation has quietly and steadily transformed opportunity for students and teachers across the district — and its growth tells a powerful story. Jerry Vaughan, Director, helps us see their full impact.

What began with seed money from community-run bingo games in the 1980s and 1990s has grown into an organization that has now surpassed $1 million in total impact. Today, the Grain Valley Education Foundation has:

  • Awarded over $751,680 in student scholarships
  • Provided $141,715+ in teacher grants
  • Contributed more than $60,000 in additional grants
  • Directed $202,230 to building activity funds
  • Built an endowment exceeding $500,000

In the most recent year alone, the Foundation awarded 107 scholarships totaling $121,700 — a remarkable increase from its early days, when just three scholarships totaling $1,200 were awarded in 2010.

Behind this growth is a unique and effective partnership with Truman Heartland Community Foundation (THCF).

A Unique Model for Long-Term Stability

Unlike most education foundations in the Kansas City metro area, the Grain Valley Education Foundation operates as a department of the school district rather than as a standalone 501(c)(3). THCF serves as its fiscal sponsor, providing the nonprofit structure and administrative support that allows the Foundation to focus on impact.

This structure ensures:

  • Accountability and alignment with district priorities
  • Transparent financial oversight
  • A streamlined process for donors seeking tax-deductible contributions

As Director Jerry Vaughan explains, this model provides both stability and flexibility:

“The Truman Heartland Community Foundation is a conduit for the people in the community that want to do something good and something lasting, and you all have made it very easy to work with on this. And we very much consider this a family.”

That family partnership has enabled the Foundation to grow responsibly and sustainably over the past 16 years.

Scholarships That Open Doors

Scholarships remain a core priority of the Grain Valley Education Foundation. The Foundation supports graduating seniors, leadership programs like Boys State and Girls State, and specialized endowed scholarships created by families, alumni, and community members.

One notable strategy has been leveraging partnerships to maximize impact. Through KC Scholars, Grain Valley commits $2,500 annually per student — funding that is matched three-to-one, resulting in $10,000 per year scholarships for up to five years. This approach stretches local dollars and expands opportunity for students who might otherwise fall in the financial “middle” — earning too much for need-based aid but not qualifying for full academic rides.

It is a smart, strategic way to extend generosity further — perfectly aligned with Truman Heartland’s mission to inspire generosity and advance community well-being through the power of charitable giving.

Investing in Teachers and Classrooms

The Foundation’s impact extends beyond scholarships.

Each spring, teachers submit proposals for classroom grants and innovative projects for the following school year. Volunteer review committees evaluate applications, ensuring funds are directed to programs that will benefit students directly.

Since 2010, hundreds of thousands of dollars have supported:

  • Classroom innovation
  • Professional development
  • Building-level initiatives
  • Student leadership programs

As the district has grown from fewer than 1,000 students decades ago to nearly 4,500 students today, the Foundation’s role has grown alongside it — supplementing and enhancing educational opportunities at every level.

From Seed Money to Sustainable Endowment

When the Foundation was formally launched in 2009, it began with roughly $30,000 in seed funding that had grown from earlier community efforts. Today, the endowment exceeds half a million dollars and continues to expand — ensuring that future generations of Grain Valley students will benefit from the generosity of today’s donors.

The intentional model established at the outset — dividing efforts between scholarships, teacher grants, and endowment growth — has allowed the Foundation to remain balanced and forward-looking.

A Partnership Rooted in Community

The partnership between Grain Valley Education Foundation and Truman Heartland Community Foundation reflects the power of collaboration.

Through fiscal sponsorship, endowment management, donor support, and administrative infrastructure, Truman Heartland provides the foundation beneath the Foundation — allowing local leaders like Jerry Vaughan and an engaged advisory board to focus on community relationships and student impact.

Together, this partnership demonstrates how local generosity, guided stewardship, and long-term vision can build something lasting.

From three scholarships in 2010 to more than 100 today, the growth of the Grain Valley Education Foundation is more than financial — it represents expanded opportunity, empowered educators, and a community investing in its future.

And that is the power of charitable giving in action.
