More than $1 million awarded to 360 students through 483 scholarships

Truman Heartland Community Foundation (THCF) is proud to announce that $1,000,125 in scholarships has been awarded to 360 students throughout Eastern Jackson County and the surrounding region for the 2026-27 academic year.

This milestone marks the first time in THCF’s history that annual scholarship awards have surpassed $1 million, continuing a trend of remarkable growth in the support for local students pursuing higher education and career training opportunities through the Foundation’s scholarship program.

The record-setting amount was awarded through 483 scholarships made possible by 184 named scholarship funds established by generous individuals, families, businesses, and organizations committed to investing in the next generation.

The Foundation received 3,329 scholarship applications this year from students across the region. A dedicated team of 520 volunteer reviewers invested countless hours evaluating applications and selecting recipients based on each scholarship’s unique criteria and donor intent.

Rachael Cassiday Watkins, THCF Director of Scholarships, expressed gratitude for the volunteers and fundholders who make the program possible.

“Our scholarship program continues to grow because of the generosity of our fundholders and the dedication of hundreds of community volunteers,” said Watkins. “Together, they are creating life-changing opportunities for students and helping remove financial barriers to education. Reaching the $1 million milestone is a testament to the power of philanthropy and our community’s commitment to investing in future leaders.”

THCF celebrated this year’s recipients during the 2026 Scholarship Awards Reception on Thursday, June 4, 2026, where scholarship fundholders and student awardees gathered to recognize academic achievement and celebrate the generosity that makes these opportunities possible. During the event, students were honored on stage and had the opportunity to meet the donors and representatives behind the scholarship funds supporting their educational pursuits.

The Scholarship Awards Reception serves as a meaningful reminder of the personal connections that philanthropy creates, bringing together those who invest in education with the students whose lives are being impacted by that investment.
