Strategically located at the crossroads of Kansas City, Independence, and Raytown, the Drop-In Center is the only facility of its kind east of 435 Highway, making it a critical resource for Eastern Jackson County.

This week, Truman Heartland Community Foundation (THCF) hosted a special Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Community Services League’s (CSL) Eastern Jackson County Drop-In Center — a vital refuge providing life-changing support for unsheltered individuals in our region.

The City of Independence has been a strong supporter of this initiative, working alongside CSL to ensure the center meets the pressing needs of the community.

A Community Collaboration for Compassion and Change

During the tour, our fundholders heard from THCF President and CEO Phil Hanson, who highlighted the importance of supporting initiatives like the Drop-In Center. CEO Doug Cowan of Community Services League shared the impact of the center, which opened in February 2025 and has already served over 350 visitors. The Drop-In Center offers a range of critical services — from providing meals and hygiene items to assisting with essential documents like IDs and birth certificates, which are often barriers to securing employment and housing.

Pastor Andreas Stavno, the leader of Good Shepherd Community of Christ, spoke about how hosting the Drop-In Center is a natural extension of the church’s mission of loving your neighbor. His message of compassion and community responsibility resonated deeply with those in attendance.

Expanding to Meet Critical Needs

While the Drop-In Center has already made a tremendous impact, there is much more to be done. CEO Doug Cowan announced that CSL is launching a $750,000 capital campaign to enhance the facility, adding private bathrooms, showers, and laundry facilities for guests. Plans also include creating private office spaces for case management, ensuring that guests receive personalized support in a secure and respectful environment.

In a show of support, THCF President and CEO Phil Hanson announced a $10,000 gift from the Truman Heartland Community Foundation to CSL, encouraging THCF fundholders to consider joining the effort. “This is a crucial resource for our community,” Phil shared, “and we have an opportunity to support its growth and ensure its success.”

How You Can Help

As we left the Drop-In Center, our group was inspired by the dedication of CSL’s team, the compassion of Good Shepherd Community of Christ, and the resilience of the guests who are finding hope and stability within its walls. But there is more to be done.

If you would like to support CSL’s Eastern Jackson County Drop-In Center and its $750,000 fundraising goal, you can make a direct contribution or recommend a grant from your Donor-Advised Fund with THCF. Together, we can ensure that this life-changing resource continues to serve those in need.
