Thousands of families across Eastern Jackson County are facing an urgent challenge. With the recent suspension of SNAP benefits in Missouri and the ongoing federal government shutdown, many households are suddenly without the two most basic forms of support: food assistance and steady income.

The impact is widespread. More than 650,000 Missourians rely on SNAP each month, including tens of thousands of families right here in our region. At the same time, the Kansas City metro — home to nearly 30,000 federal employees — has seen thousands of local workers go without pay for over a month. That means real families, real neighbors, and real needs.

Local food pantries and nonprofits are doing everything they can, but demand has surged — in some cases tripling — since October.

Truman Heartland Community Foundation is working alongside these front-line organizations to help fill the food and family support gap during this crisis.
