John S. Barrett, Sr. was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He served as a military police officer during the Vietnam War and was a 25-year veteran police officer with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.

After retirement, John served the community of Lathrop, Missouri, as a member of the Lathrop Board of Education, the Rural Water District Board of Directors, the Lathrop Fire Protection District Board of Directors and the Lathrop Rotary Club.

John was a man that understood the value of a good education. He continuously encouraged young people to attend college and earn a degree because “that piece of paper would open many doors for them.”

This scholarship was established in memory of John by his wife, Virginia, and his children, John S. Barrett, Jr. and Amy G. Barrett. It is the hope of John’s family that this scholarship will help open doors for its recipients.

Mrs. Jan Bodas established this scholarship in loving memory of her husband, Daniel L. Bodas, to benefit students graduating from Eveleth-Gilbert Senior High School in Eveleth, Minnesota, who are pursuing technical trade certifications or associates of applied sciences degrees. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing automotive or aviation mechanics.

Dan graduated from Gilbert High School in 1963 and joined the United States Air Force the next day. He served as a jet engine mechanic and engine test cell specialist in England and Libya. After his term of service in the Air Force, Dan lived an adventuresome life working in aviation mechanics all over the world including Turkey, Ethiopia, Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, the Antilles, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Spain, Portugal, Majorca, and the Azores. After his career, he retired to his farm in the Ozarks to hunt and fish.

Dan was a beloved husband, a modest and generous man, and he lived each day by his personal motto, “Just keep going.” Mrs. Bodas hopes that this scholarship in Dan’s memory will lead to opportunity and adventure for future generations of mechanics in all fields.

Steven D. Brown started teaching at Olathe High School in 1972. He served as assistant principal at Santa Fe Trail Junior High from 1974 to 1982. Mr. Brown became principal at Santa Fe Trail in 1982, and remained in that position until his untimely death on May 21, 1992.

Mr. Brown loved sports. He played basketball in college, coached at Olathe North and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Olathe Christian Church and was active in community service, serving as chair of the Gardner Planning Commission for 10 years and as president of the Gardner Lions’ Club.

This memorial scholarship was established by Jeanne Brown Geiger in Steve’s honor to benefit students of the Olathe School District.

David Cromwell was a 2003 graduate of Blue Springs South High School. He was enrolled at the University of Missouri-Columbia and planned to start classes in the fall of 2004. David died in a tragic accident six weeks after his high school graduation.

Perhaps more importantly to Phil, he was a pillar in his community. His commitment to his family and business was matched only by his drive to help others. Chuck and Jeneen Jones were 50+ year members of the First Baptist Church of Harrisonville and raised their family in the Church, where Chuck also served as Chief Usher and elder on the Church Council. They were both passionate about public service and the importance of quality education and dedicated much of their lives towards that end.

Chuck served on the Harrisonville school board for 18 years including six years as President. He also served on the Harrisonville City Council for four years and then as Mayor for a further eight years. Jeneen was a lifelong educator in the Harrisonville School District and inspired three of her four children to become teachers as well.

Senator Ronnie DePasco was a resident of the Historic Northeast neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, for over 50 years. In 1976, with encouragement from family and friends, DePasco ran for the Missouri House of Representatives. Winning that election, he went on to represent the Northeast area in the House for the next 16 years. In 1992, he was elected to the Missouri Senate. He was reelected to this position several more times and proudly served as Senator until his death in 2003.

During DePasco’s tenure as an elected official, he achieved many notable goals, including securing funding for the Liberty Memorial, the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum, the Truman Memorial Building and the historic Harry S. Truman Courthouse in Independence. As an avid supporter of law enforcement, he was widely recognized for his work on issues affecting the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department and his sponsorship of many anti-crime bills such as Jake’s Law.

Senator DePasco’s family has established this scholarship foundation to honor his memory and the love he had for his community and its future.

The Jay McNamara Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2020 by the McNamara family to provide scholarships to students attending St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School in Lee’s Summit, MO. Jay McNamara had a passion for life, and his generous heart touched so many. At the early age of 43, Jay passed away from coronary artery disease that had gone undiagnosed. Jay was a 1993 graduate of Archbishop O’Hara High School. His family and friends want to continue to honor Jay’s legacy of love through this scholarship.

The Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care Pamela Puppe Patient Care Scholarship was established in 2021 to benefit employees of Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care who are pursuing higher education to advance their knowledge and skills to care for Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care patients.

Mrs. Puppe dreamed as a child of being a nurse, but she did not have the resources or support to pursue her dream. It is her hope that this scholarship will provide the resources and support she wished she had to the employees of Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care. Mrs. Puppe established this scholarship to honor the difference Kansas City Hospice's caregivers have made in some of the most difficult times in her life.

• Must be a full- or part-time employee of Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, having completed ninety (90) calendar days of full- or part-time employment at the time of application;
• Must be pursuing professional certification requirements; Continuing Education Units related to completing, renewing or maintaining professional certification; or college courses to enhance skills related to current or future patient care positions;
• Courses must be taken through an accredited junior college, college, or university;
• A minimum grade of "B" or equivalent must be attained for each course taken.

The William G. Lueckenhoff Memorial Scholarship was established by the Lueckenhoff family in honor of William Lueckenhoff. Will was born May 27th, 1954 in New York City and then moved to Kansas City as a young boy. He attended St. Bernadette School, O'Hara High School, Southwest Missouri State University and UMKC Law School. Will played varsity football at Southwest Missouri as a starter on the defensive line. He later played rugby at a high level in Kansas City and Chicago. After graduation from law school, Will followed in his father's footsteps and joined the FBI as a Special Agent. He served in the FBI for 25 years, holding many different positions across the country. After retiring from the FBI, Will worked in a number of private sector security positions including more than two years in Iraq as a law enforcement advisor to the military.

After many years of career-driven relocations, Will and his wife Trina chose to return to their beloved hometown of Kansas City. While in Kansas City, Will worked for Catholic Charities and later as a private investigator. Will was an active parishioner of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Will was known for his generosity and his determination to help others in need. This scholarship seeks to continue Will’s legacy of generosity and his commitment to the Catholic faith by providing tuition assistance to students at St. Michael the Archangel High School in Lee’s Summit, MO. Will and his wife Trina had a keen interest in supporting St. Michael the Archangel High School since it is near their home in Lee’s Summit and Will had graduated from O’Hara High School and Trina from St. Mary’s High School. With the closing of these two high schools, St. Michael’s as the new Catholic High School in the area seeks to carry on the traditions of O’Hara and St. Mary’s.
