Entrepreneurs Honor the Spirit of a Cherished Mother and Teacher
Since the sudden loss of Glenda, Eden’s mother, Nick and Eden have had a passion to impact students similar to those Glenda would have taught at Lee’s Summit North High School. “Mom was able to structure her classes in a way to make atypical students excel. While we can never replace the personal impact she had on the lives of her students, we want to honor my mom by positively impacting some of the students that she would have taught if she was still with us,” noted Eden.
Eden and Nick were referred to the foundation by a friend who had seen how partnering with the Community Foundation could make a long term impact and aid the couple in their tax planning. “When we started Glenda’s scholarship fund at the community foundation, it was the first time that we learned that awarding scholarships not only made emotional sense, but made financial sense as well.” said Nick. “We are excited to see the scholarship fund and awards grow over time and to provide a permanent scholarship in Glenda’s honor.”
Today, the Glenda K. Dowler Memorial Scholarship provides two scholarships annually to students who wouldn’t typically qualify for merit based scholarships. This scholarship will benefit students forever in Lee’s Summit, thanks to the vision and passion of Eden and Nick in 2014, when they decided to endow Eden’s mother’s scholarship at Truman Heartland Community Foundation. “Partnering with the Community Foundation made administering the scholarship easy, now I don’t have to worry about any of the details and can focus on honoring my mother by impacting the students that were close to her heart,” said Eden. “We have had such a great experience with this fund that we are looking into additional ways to partner with the community foundation to maximize our charitable impact in the community.”
