Give Smart - Saving Lake

The City of Independence Animal Shelter Fund at THCF was established to provide operational support for the City of Independence Animal Shelter. The shelter offers numerous services to Independence and unincorporated Jackson County, including sheltering facilities, trap-neuter-release programs, animal control services, a pet food pantry, and more. And when an abandoned animal needs life-saving medical attention, our community comes to the rescue.

A momma and puppies were dumped on the shores of a nearby lake. Independence Animal Shelter was called and rescued the lot. During her spay operation, it was discovered that the momma, now lovingly named Lake, had an enlarged heart. Subsequent tests showed Lake had damage to the valves of her heart as well as a pretty bad heart murmur. Without surgery, Lake would not live long.

Mission Driven Owner, Scott Poore, learned of Lake's grave condition, reached out to his 15K Facebook followers, and asked for help. Mission Driven is a for-profit apparel company in Mission, Kansas, raising awareness for long-term shelter pets looking for their furever homes. With a click of a mouse, a link to the Independence Animal Shelter Fund at THCF was included in his post. Within four days, the shelter had raised more than enough money to cover all the expenses of treatment at the University of Missouri.

One simple post with a link to a fund saved a life. We appreciate every penny that flows through our doors, from the $2 million estate gift to establish scholarships to the $25 Facebook donation to help a little dog return home to her pups. It's all about giving back to make our communities better places to live, work, and serve. Now that's Giving Smart with a heart.

Have you shared a link to your Fund with friends and family? When you share your passion with those close to you, you may be surprised how much good you can do together.
