YAC Students Collect 40,000+ Items at Fill Those Trucks

On Saturday, April 6, students in the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) of Truman Heartland Community Foundation collected more than 40,000 items at their 6th Annual Fill Those Trucks Food Drive.

Students from 13 participating high schools were at four Hy-Vee locations in Eastern Jackson County from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. collecting food items and personal hygiene items for Community Services League, Lee’s Summit Social Services and Raytown Emergency Assistance Program.

“I really enjoyed my day spending time asking people for donations and receiving some amazing donations not only food but also cash donations,” said Bryanna Counts, a senior at Van Horn High School and YAC member since 2015.

In addition to donated food items, the students received $1,500 in cash donations. YAC students used the cash donations to purchase additional food and personal hygiene items.

“The people in my community are very generous and loving people and we don’t give them enough credit,” said Bryanna. “When you ask for help, they deliver and that was amazing to see.”

Truman Heartland’s Youth Advisory Council engages 190 students annually from 13 high schools in Eastern Jackson County. YAC students gain hands-on experience in fundraising, grantmaking and volunteering. Learn more about Youth Advisory Council at https://www.thcf.org/Initiatives-Impact/Youth-Advisory-Council
